BOOK REVIEW: I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World by Malala Yousafai with Patricia McCormick

Choosing book club books can be overwhelming at times, because not everyone's interest can be held with nonfiction. This year, we chose the young readers edition I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World as the nonfiction piece. I can say without a doubt, that this book not only held my attention, but made me want to buy I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, so I could read more about the history from the book.

Part of the reason I enjoyed the book was because the short chapters kept a fast reading pace, and when I needed to take a break, I could easily jump into the next chapter. Also, the ease of the storytelling, with the child-like tone, helped me understand how significant of a role Malala has played in history. Not only did she stand up for her education, but for billions of people around the world.

Yes, she was shot for speaking out about her passions of women's rights, education, and human rights, but that won't be her legacy. No, Malala has, and will continue to, fight for world peace.

WHAT I LIKED: Reading about Malala's life history brought even more respect for her as a person. One might think Malala had only fought against terror for a few months or years, but that was not the cause. By displaying her activism, I was able to garner the how the human rights causes became to dear to her heart.

Furthermore, with Malala's strong voice, and thorough imagery, I felt angry that any man, woman, or child would have to live during a time of war.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Not much, to be honest. Sometimes I wanted more detail about the conflicts, but then remembered I was reading a young readers edition.

RATED 5 Stars

If you get the chance, even if you think you won't like it, read this book. For me, I was reminded that I must continue to speak out against ideas that infringe on human rights.

NOTE: This review is also posted on Goodreads. Additionally, I bought and paid for the book on my own, and did not receive any compensation for this review.
