BOOK REVIEW: Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

Grandeur! Transformation! Intrigue!

What better adjectives to describe Nimona by Noelle Stevenson? There are none, because this graphic novel, which was originally a web series, has it all!

Nimona finds the ironically named Lord Blackheart, and wants to be his sidekick. At first, he refuses, but unlike his name suggests, the murder-avoiding villain gives in and a friendship begins.

Blackheart has it out for his former best friend, and now nemesis, Sir Goldenloin, who works for the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics. See, as Blackheart was training to be a knight, in a joust Goldenloin cut off Blackheart's shoulder/arm (which is now robotic), maiming him for life, and sending him out of the institution.

So, midst the burgeoning friendship between Blackheart and Nimona, we learn Blackheart believes the Institution is up to no good, and wants to seek revenge for his arm. And, when he and Nimona go on their first heist, Blackheart learns some damning information, not only about the Institution, but about his sidekick as well.

Adding in the latter twist, Sir Goldenloin has been charged with bringing in Nimona, due to her dangerous behavior.

WHAT I LIKED: The colorful, detailed graphics made this novel a joy to read. Not only did the words advance the plot, but the character actions and transformation did as well.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: At the end of a few chapters, there were awkward transitions. Sometimes, I thought I had missed a page, because all of a sudden the characters and setting would change.

RATED: 4 Stars

I took one star off for the chapter transitions, but honestly, I would NOT let that stop me from reading this graphic novel, nor any other writing Noelle Stevenson publishes.

NOTE: This review is also posted on Goodreads. Additionally, I bought and paid for the book on my own, and did not receive any compensation for this review.
